Description
This project involved designing and producing a complete set of digital and print materials for the 2024 ESDAA Soccer Tournament, hosted by Lexington School for the Deaf and other participating schools. The goal was to provide students, families, and participating schools with an engaging visual experience—from the tournament website to event lanyards, a program booklet, and video highlights—while ensuring everyone had clear access to the information they needed. It was a fast-paced project where I often had to juggle multiple tasks, but I enjoyed getting it all done.
Research & Planning
At the beginning, my high school athletic director guided me during my internship to work on the ESDAA Soccer Tournament with him. He shared references from previous ESDAA tournaments and other school sports events, which helped me understand more about branding, layout, and event communication needs. I also identified key deliverables I needed to complete, including the tournament website, event lanyards, a program booklet, and a highlight video. I knew it was a big project, and I was determined to get it done.
I researched past tournament websites, including Lexington’s ESDAA basketball and cheerleading sites, which I hadn’t contributed to before. I noticed gaps such as limited features and minimal information. In my version, I designed a site focused on user needs, easy access to information, and updates throughout the 3-day tournament. My design allowed visitors to explore full soccer team rosters, learn about participating schools, and access much more.
For the event lanyards, my athletic director gave me a collection of old, messy lanyards. I went through them one by one, studying and observing, which helped me brainstorm creatively and design a fresh, modern look for the tournament.
He also gave me a 2024 Clerc Classic book program, which I used as a reference and inspiration to create the booklet for this tournament.
Reflection
Working on this project lasted three months and involved fast-paced updates to the website, all while I was starting as a team captain for the varsity soccer team playing in the tournament—we ended up placing third! It felt like juggling a lot at once, but in the end, I had a lot of fun. There was no stress in between—don’t worry! This experience really strengthened my skills, and I’m grateful to the athletic director for giving me this amazing opportunity.
